edible landscape design

Ecologic Solutions creates landscapes that produce fruits, nuts, herbs, and vegetables. Each design is specifically tailored to your site, soil, water, and frost conditions of the land. We use smart design methods to help reduce maintenance of your space.

What is edible landscape design?

Edible landscape design involves creating a garden or property that looks beautiful, but your plants also produce food. This approach incorporates fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, herbs, perennial vegetables, and flowers in place of traditional lawns and ornamental shrubs. Each plant is strategically positioned for growth, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing environment that also benefits local wildlife. Unlike a vegetable patch, which is replanted each season, an edible landscape includes perennial plantings, like fruit trees. These are arranged in layers, ranging from tall trees to ground covers, allowing the same area to produce food for many years.

who is this for?

  • Backyard gardeners who are looking for a productive and beautiful space

  • Acreage and lifestyle block owners who want their land to feed the household, not just be mowed.

  • Hobby farmers adding an orchard, nut grove or food forest to an existing property.

  • New landowners starting from a bare paddock who want a plan before they spend money on plants.

  • Agricultural entrepreneurs planning a small orchard, market garden or farm-gate business.

what an edible landscape design includes:

Every design gives the landowner a clear plan, including:

  • Site assessment: we characterise your local microclimate and use this data as the foundation for your design.

  • Water plan: where to slow and hold rainwater on the land, for example with swales (shallow ditches dug along the contour of a slope).

  • Planting plan: fruit trees, nut trees, berries, herbs and support plants specially selected for your microclimate and conditions.

  • Layout map: a scaled map of your design.

  • Care guide: guidance and recommendations for how to look after your edible landscape, including pruning, mulching and watering.

how the process works

  • Site information. Location, available space, existing conditions, and goals.

  • Data-grounded assessment. Climate zone, soil, and spacing constraints inform which species are viable.

  • Design. Species selection and layout, built from a reference database of species matched to climate, strata, and succession stage.

  • Blueprint. A plan showing the steps needed to bring your dream to life, covering species, layout, and a multi-year establishment timeline.
